Dreams of Peace & Freedom is a moving song cycle exploring the birth of modern human rights. The writings of
David Maxwell Fyfe, Nuremberg prosecutor and
champion of the European Convention,
intertwine with musical settings of the poets who inspired him.
Premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2014, it toured as a
pop-up production through the spring of 2015, and now returns to contribute to the debate about the future of human rights in the UK.

‘Maxwell-Fyfe’s involvement in drafting the ECHR was key. In certain ways, in his very person he also provided a living link between the Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Just as the Universal Declaration reflected the insights and experiences of men and women who had just witnessed and in some cases had been personally devased by the events of the second world war so the text of the European Convention was moulded by a man who had been indelibly affected by the same epoch making events . ’

On August 29th 1946 David Maxwell Fyfe gave his one address to the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. In delivering it he looked back at the year of the trials: the decision to strive to provide the defendants justice, the evidence of atrocity, and the cross-examination of the Nazi leaders. And he looked forward to his work over the next 5 years in championing and drafting the European Convention on Human Rights.
